Re: application for the teacher role

Dear Hiring Manager,

01 · The hook

I am writing to apply for the teaching post at your school.

02 · The proof

I have taught secondary maths for six years, with classes of up to 30 pupils, and raised my subject's pass rate from 71 % to 86 % over two academic years.

03 · The fit

Your school's project-based approach and its work on inclusion match what I already build into my lesson planning.

04 · The close

My CV is attached and I would be pleased to attend an interview.

Kind regards,

Your name

01

What a hiring manager looks for in a teacher cover letter

Whoever recruits for a teacher role spends under a minute on the first read. In that minute they want three answers: have you done this work before, will you fit the team, and are you available when needed. Anything that answers none of those three can go.

That is why a cover letter does not repeat the CV — it interprets it. The CV lists roles and dates; the letter explains what you can do with them. If your experience touches lesson planning or continuous assessment, the letter is where you give the context, the volume and the outcome.

Write it in the first person and keep it positive. No apologies, no paragraphs about what you lack. A gap in your history is handled in one line and left behind; it should never become the subject of the letter.

02

The four paragraphs, one by one

The first paragraph names the role and where you saw it. Use the same wording as the advert for the teacher position: that phrase is the first thing the screening software matches and the first thing the reader looks for.

The second paragraph decides it. Put two or three measurable facts here: volume, frequency, result or improvement. One number beats three adjectives, and a specific number about form tutor proves competence better than any statement of intent.

The third is about the employer, not you: why this one and not another. The fourth closes with availability and an invitation to meet. Four paragraphs, 250 to 350 words in total, never more than one page.

03

Role keywords and automated screening

Most applications pass through a system that compares your wording with the advert. It does not reward elegant prose — it rewards literal overlap. For a teacher, the vocabulary worth including naturally is: Lesson planning, Continuous assessment, Form tutor, Mixed-ability classes, Year coordination.

Use each term inside a sentence with context, never in a list bolted onto the end. "I worked with lesson planning for two years on early shifts" counts; "Lesson planning, Continuous assessment, Form tutor" on its own reads as filler.

Then match every advert: if the employer calls the role something else, the advert wins. Swapping two or three terms per application takes a minute and decides whether you make the shortlist.

04

Format, sending and following up

One page, generous margins, the same type size as your CV, and a PDF with a recognisable filename: surname, role, year. If you send it by email, do not leave the message body empty — three lines of introduction with the PDF attached.

Address a named person whenever you can find one. "Dear hiring team" is the fallback when no name is published anywhere. Never "To whom it may concern".

If there is no reply after five working days, a short follow-up email is entirely acceptable and lifts response rates. Restate the role, add one new fact, and close without pressing.

Common mistakes and how to fix them

What hurts: Repeating the CV line by line

What helps: Explaining the two experiences that matter for this role

What hurts: The same letter for every employer

What helps: Naming the company and one real reason in paragraph three

What hurts: Adjectives with nothing behind them

What helps: Numbers: volume, frequency, result

What hurts: Two pages of text

What helps: One page, four paragraphs, 250-350 words

What hurts: Never using the words "teacher"

What helps: Using the advert's own job title in the first line

What hurts: No closing or availability

What helps: A clear invitation to interview and a start date

Qualification, key stage and subject: no reading without them

Teaching letters are read against a checklist. The first check is the qualifying route: degree, teacher training qualification, subject specialism and registration status. Then the key stage and subject: early years, primary, secondary, sixth form, vocational or adult education are not the same job, and a letter that leaves it unclear forces the reader to guess.

The second paragraph has to describe a real classroom: group sizes, year groups taught, differentiation, curriculum adaptations, pupils with additional support needs and behaviour management. That is where it shows whether you have stood in front of a difficult class or only tutored one to one.

If you have used platforms and methods, name them: Moodle, Google Classroom, interactive whiteboards, project-based learning, assessment for learning, rubrics, your own schemes of work. In a school that cares about its pedagogy, that weighs as much as the certificate.

Families, the department and the school's ethos

Teachers also deal with parents, act as form tutors and sit in department meetings. Give two or three lines to pastoral work: parents' evenings, individual tracking, liaison with the SEN coordinator. It is a part of the role almost nobody writes about and every head keeps in mind.

The employer paragraph is answered with the school's ethos. If it is bilingual, state your certified language level; if it has a particular character, acknowledge it without overacting; if it is vocational, talk about your industry experience, because in vocational teaching real trade experience is a strong argument.

Close with availability and start date: cover, full academic year, part time or after-school provision. Teaching vacancies are often urgent and a clear date makes the call easier.

Numbers that prove teaching experience

  • Three full academic years teaching maths to four groups of 30 pupils.
  • Form tutor to 28 pupils with termly meetings with every family.
  • Wrote the subject scheme of work, assessed by competency with rubrics.
  • Raised pass rates from 68% to 84% over two years with in-class support.

What does not work in a teaching letter

  • Omitting the qualifying route and specialism: it is a legal requirement, not a detail.
  • Three paragraphs about vocation and not one classroom example.
  • Leaving out pastoral work and parents, which is half the job in any school.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a teacher cover letter be?
One page, 250 to 350 words across four paragraphs. Anything longer rarely gets read to the end, and the decisive information — your numbers — should already be in the second paragraph.
Do I still need a cover letter if I attach my CV?
Yes, whenever the employer allows one. The CV proves what you did; the letter explains why it matters for this vacancy and shows you understood the advert. For a teacher role it is also where you confirm availability and shift flexibility.
Which keywords should appear?
The advert's own job title plus the terms the sector uses: Lesson planning, Continuous assessment, Form tutor, Mixed-ability classes, Year coordination. Place them inside sentences with context, never as a list.
What if I have no experience?
Lead with studies, placements, personal or academic projects, and transferable habits: punctuality, teamwork, languages. Say plainly that you are starting out and what you can already contribute from day one.
