01

Professional headline

This is the line that decides whether they keep reading: a specific role and years of experience, never an adjective.

Tips for this CV

What separates a CV for this trade from a generic one.

  1. 01

Put your subject and QTS at the top — it's the first filter in education recruitment.

  2. 02

Quantify pupil impact (grades, pass rates, attendance), not just the subjects taught.

  3. 03

Group courses and certificates with hours and awarding body; panels score that detail.

07

What a teacher CV is

Short definition, ready to quote.

A teacher CV is the one or two page document used to apply for a teacher role in education: it brings together the professional headline, the profile summary, experience with measurable results and the competencies the trade expects you to evidence, such as Lesson planning and Assessment for learning. Unlike a generic CV, it is ordered around what the applicant tracking system and the hiring manager look for in a teacher: the words used in the advert and the numbers of the actual job.

08

Keywords and where to place them

Each term works best in a specific place in the document. Repeating them all at the end scores nothing.

09

How this teacher CV gets through the filters

What the example above does right, point by point.

  • The headline reads «Secondary maths teacher with 9 years in the classroom»: the job title (teacher) appears literally in the first line, not as a creative synonym.
  • The trade's keywords —schemes of work, assessment, form tutor— sit inside the experience and summary, where the filter reads them in context.
  • Every achievement carries its figure. «Raised average GCSE maths attainment by a full grade across two years» is the pattern to copy: volume, timeframe and result.
  • Skills such as Lesson planning, Assessment for learning, Cooperative learning are written as plain text, never as rating bars or stars, which no parser can read.
  • The Dublin template is single-column and rated ATS verified, so the sections come out in order.

10

What hiring managers look for in a teacher

The three points that separate two candidates in this trade.

Key stage, subject and groups

Primary, secondary and post-16 are different jobs. Give the key stage, the subject and the year groups you taught, with class and pupil numbers: “KS4, four groups, 112 pupils”.

QTS and status

State your degree, your route to QTS, your subject specialism and your early-career teacher status. It is the administrative filter for the sector.

Outcomes and practice

Give what can be measured honestly: progress against school averages, attendance in your groups, intervention outcomes, and the platforms you used.

11

Common mistakes on a teacher CV

The ones that repeat in this role, each with its fix.

  1. 01

Writing “taught lessons” with no key stage

One sentence covering primary and sixth form leaves the CV unusable, because hiring is by subject and key stage. Without those, a head of department cannot place you.

  2. 02

Leaving out form tutoring and parental contact

Tutoring is half the real job: monitoring, parents' evenings, liaising with the SEND coordinator and intervention plans. It is what a deputy head values most and almost nobody writes.

  3. 03

    Not mentioning SEND

Differentiation, education and health care plans, and work with the SEND coordinator are genuine requirements in every school, not filler lines.

  4. 04

A supporting statement that says nothing

Schools read the letter as closely as the CV, mapped to the person specification. Generic enthusiasm loses to two paragraphs of concrete classroom practice.

12

What a teacher earns

So you can tell whether an advert is at market rate before applying.

Usual range
Main pay range typically £31,000-£43,000, with London weighting and responsibility payments on top
What moves the figure
The pay range, responsibility payments and London banding set the figure; independent schools run their own scales.
Where the figure comes from
Ranges observed in UK teaching adverts through 2026 against published pay ranges.

Frequently asked

Questions about a teacher CV

What do I need to teach in a UK secondary school?
A degree in or close to the subject and qualified teacher status, plus completion of your induction for a permanent post. State your route and your induction year explicitly.
How should a teaching CV be structured?
Two pages: current role with key stages, groups and outcomes, then earlier posts, then education, then training. Schools also expect a supporting letter mapped to the person specification.
Does supply or tutoring work count?
Yes. Supply proves adaptability across schools, and tutoring proves subject knowledge and progress. Describe both with pupil numbers, subject and results.
Should I include safeguarding training?
Yes, with the level and the year, plus your background-check status. It is a condition of employment and having it visible shortens pre-employment checks.
